When I started my main sources of inspiration was the Final Fantasy series in terms of layout and battle system, but lately I've been toying around with the notion of adopting a Pool of Radience: The Ruins of Myth Drannor style battle system if I can't work out a decent way to use a Street Fighter type system for a multi party system (I know Street Fighter 2 and all of its incarnations are a totally different genre, but the battle system isn't what makes an RPG an RPG).
Also, at the risk of being chastized for throwing in an off topic comment, saying "RPG games" is a bit redundant. The 'G' in RPG means game, so you're essentially saying "Role Playing Game game." Sorry to rant, that's just a pet peeve of mine.

my favorite RPGs were Pokemon and the Golden Sun series. pokemon really drew me in when i was a kid, and now i'm basing my rpg example's style of battle off of that, at least in perspective. golden sun was the most addicting rpg i ever played. i used to go to sleep, and then turn it on the second i woke up. i haven't used it as an influence yet though, as my example is my first rpg engine. it probably will influence me some way though.

i've played many rpgs in my time final fantasy 4,5,6,8,9, final fantasy tactics, mystic quest,7th saga (an excellent game), illusion of gaia zelda 1 and 3( link to the past ) secret of mana, brain lord ,legend of mana, and even d&d but all of these games i played many moons ago(years and years) but the most influencial thing a man could ever have is his imagination, screw video games they never influenced much in my life, it was all from old fantasy books that my older bro used to have and especially d&d, since i was a kid back then it was easy to use my imagination, every night before i went to sleep i would think of an adventure and by the time i got to sleep i would be dreaming it,
but these days all i'm dreaming of are nightmares everynight(weird) but someday i'll get it all back
(i wonder if i went off topic)

I love tactical RPGs. Turn-based strategy. Fallout, Shining Force, Vandal Hearts. Final Fantasy Tactics was okay, but I didn't like the Brave / Faith / Zodiac signs system. It made the game more complicated than it had to be. I'm currently working on an full-fledged Shining Force engine. Back to the basics, I say. Quit with the stupid karmic relationships affecting damage and such.

I haven't played many RPGs, so pokemon is a big influence on my rpg engine. Basically every non battle thing i do is inspired by the pokemon games. My battle system is inspired by what i remember of FF2/3 - which i played a long time ago. Im not really sure of my favourite RPG, but i like RPGs where you build machines for battle, or raise monsters for battle. I don't like my games to be too realistic (eg: monster rancher- where your monsters die <_<, but i do like the games ).
