My favorite RPG would be Wizardry 8. The way you can start conversations with NPCs (And can pickpoket them > ), and they handled the battle system inspired me.

I wouldn't consider a game an RPG if you aren't permitted to make dialogue choices or create a unique character. Unfortunately that almost completely excludes all Japanese 'RPGs' from the list. My most influential RPGs (in creating Ominous) include AD&D (pen & paper), the Baldurs Gate series and also Star Wars: KotOR (the highest rated RPG of all time). I also liked Wizardry 7 and Daggerfall.

This has started going off topic again. This is your final warning.
here, to help you stay on topic, please tell how they may be reflected in your game.
Pokemon is reflected in my game by the battle system style. the menus and such. Morrowind has inspired me, and has tought me what NOT to do. From Morrowind, I know to give AI better intellegence, and more interaction. In Morrowind, the AI only walks around on a path, and doesn't really do anything other than walk, and sometimes fight. They don't pick up items, they don't go into or out of houses, and they don't sleep or anything.

Ism is right, stay on topic and refrain from saying that people's choices in games is bad. This is about what games inspire you not what game is best.
I actually recently decided to add a character from a pen and pencil D&D campaign I've been playing. He's just a really funny character, a singing chimney sweep (not like in Mary Poppins this guy just sings silly little things while he works) but he also knows everything that's going on in the criminal world of the city.
So regular D&D can be a great inspiration if you play, the same with other pen and paper or LARP RPGs. I also play at a Vampire the Masquerade LARP and have gotten a lot of ideas from other players on personalities to give my NPCs.

yeah, that's true. I use P&P RPG's to help me design a battle system mathematecal random results stuff (like attack hits/misses for 1 - 20 points)

Baldur's Gate 2 mostly has influenced me mostly in that the style of game play is excellent and im really into the storyline.
I'm not making a remake or anything of BG2 but it was the first rpg i played that inspired me to get into game making and all. Ive played diablo and some japenese rpgs but they didnt capture me as BG did.
My game is gonna be similiar to BG in that the storyline is gonna have many twist, turns, side quest and such but all will be connected in some way to the Main Story. A lot of the fantasy that comes in BG is D&D, which i have never played, but the fantasy part im going for is a collection of myths, legends, and such in real life, things from games such as BG, and well my own ideas for a fantasy world.
So BG has influenced me in a storyline type fashion and as i play more and more of it, i feel i can gain more ideas for my game, "Darkhorse"..

I'd suggest to anyone who has never played D&D to either borrow a copy of the books from a friend or sometimes libraries happen or pick up cheap used copies. Just reading through the books even if you don't play can give lots of inspiration and like IsmAvatar said looking at how D&D does the math for hits and damage could help you when you go to work out your battle system regardless of whether it's realtime or turnbased.

I've never played D&D (it's banned in my school), I was more referring to just p&p RPG's in general, like vampire, whitewolf, tenchi muiyo, etc. A friend of mine is running a Fallout campaign, in which I am taking part in, and I'm particularly interested in the percentage idea, where you're stats represent the percentage chance of a successful use. Then, you roll 2d10, where 1 is the tens, and the other is the 100's. A critical hit is 95%+, and a critical failure is a 5%-
however, d&d can be a good game to base yours off of, except that they might file a lawsuit against anyone who makes a game using their system, but they won't go after anyone whose system only slightly resembles theirs.

Actually D&D won't go after you unless you blatanly rip off the game like using one of the published game setting since all of their stuff is taken out of literature or mythology anyway (the playable races are human, elf, half-elf, dwarf, gnome, and halfling(hobbit).
Wait D&D is banned at your school but Vampire and Werewolf aren't? That is so messed up, Vampire and Werewolf take things that are blatant twists of the bible and christianity, it's far more objectionable than D&D. I guess the teachers have never really looked into the games if they haven't banned those two. Not that I think any RPG should be banned at schools (unless it's starting to cause problems in class).

well, let's just say that the class of 1970 thought that destruction of school property for purpose of a D&D campaign wasn't against the rules...

Ahhhh...that makes much more sense now. Kind of how my highschool had a no sateboarding rule after some kids in the 80s found it fun to run down the middle school kids.

My favourites are: Secret of Mana 2 ( a.k.a. Seiken Densetsu 3, but what happened to 2? lol ) Xenosaga Tale of Phantasia Tale of Destiny 2 Those are my all time favourites since thye have a good gameplay and all of them have a good storyline. I used to like final fantasy until FFX disgusted me and now I'm starting to hate the FF series for their crappy storyline/gameplay. My least favourites are: Zelda Icewind Dale some other bad RPGs.... Zelda gave me a bad first impression so I became to dislike it after playing it for a bit (I've played all Zelda games to date and none of them have impressed me). Icewind Dale was simply... bad.... No comment on that game .

FFIIV is one of my all time favorites. Although it was Noadi's game Shaman that inspired me to make an rpg. Don't know why. I suppose the graphics just made me want to have a go at one of my own.
