A few more screens for you to feast your eyes upon. A (soundless) demo will be out sometime in the near future. I'm looking at the beginning of next month. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to include the actual jousting minigame, but you will be able to get all the way up to it, to the point where you and the jouster are ready to suit up. Everyone on our team is working their hardest to get this demo out to you. Here's screenies with the new tileset and sprites. Note how the view has changed a little, so everything is tilted. userweb.nni.com/cmagicj/Arthur/blizzard.pngA little example of the snow system. userweb.nni.com/cmagicj/Arthur/scarygrass.pngI was testing out the new grass, but I guess King Arthur didn't like it too much. He hid in a corner of his house (literally). userweb.nni.com/cmagicj/Arthur/talkking.pngHere's the new dialogue system. I'm aiming for a Zelda-style everything now, only snapped to grid and 2-d. We kinda see the king, he's getting ready to talk to you. userweb.nni.com/cmagicj/Arthur/winterknight.pngHere's the guy you'll joust with. It's snowing about average now. Note the fence tiles next to him. He doesn't move (unlike the king), until you complete his quest (fetch some jousting gear), in which he will then walk off to the changing station, and get ready to joust. Tell me what you think. I'll have the dialogue working for the demo.

Here's 3 more, just to show my progress, I did all this in 1 day. userweb.nni.com/cmagicj/Arthur/couragearthur.pngArthur's finally built up the courage to face the grass. I fixed most of the bug, but there's a small other bug I have to fix. userweb.nni.com/cmagicj/Arthur/obviousking.pngThe dialogue system is working well. Here I demonstrate it with Arthur, making an obvious statement. I also totally recoded the snow system, so it works so much better and faster now. I've also discovered a way to freeze objects but still have them drawn. Then I can unfreeze the manditory objects. Due to a slight imperfection in this code, there are some minor sacrifices you have to make (no draw events are executed while objects are frozen). Because of this, I have to let the snow continue to fall while the dialogue system is up (it's quite amusing really). To see what I mean, look at the following animated gif userweb.nni.com/cmagicj/Arthur/snowdialogue.html (let it run through once so it can buffer all of the images before it runs at normal speed. only 20 frames.) I'm having trouble with the rain. It's a little hard to see against the rest of the game. Don't worry, I'll have a solution soon.

I'm hoping to be able to get a (buggy) demo out near the end of this weekend. I'm working very hard on the dialogue. As you may have seen in the screenshots, there's not much room to write stuff. What I did was I got a 5x5 font that i'm using now (it's tiny, but readable since it's scaled to 200%). Now I can fit a lot more. I'm also adding in responces, which is the part that's coming the hardest. This is not to mention trying to get the quest into play (it's very hard to add in a variable when you choose a certain responce), and also it'll be insane trying to get the npc to say something different each time. I may be forced to recode it once again just to get the quests and different sayings per talk to work out.
Now, if I do release a demo near the end of this weekend, it will be rather buggy. I'll list the bugs when I release it. Though, it'll be a cool demo, where you can actually walk around and talk to a few people, and do a quest, and look at the graphics.
I've come up with a solution - kinda - to the rain problem. I figured that since it's foggy a lot in england, then every time it rains, it'll get foggy. Everything tints brighter (whiter) and the blue stands out a bit more.
Can't think of anything else that i'm allowed to tell you right now, so that'll be it for this post.
Update 05/09/04 at 11:33pm GMT: It's being really stubborn. The demo won't happen this weekend, look for it next weekend.
Update 05/11/04 at 9:37pm GMT: Well, I completed the dialogue box, and took it the full way without having to recode it. I also redid the collision system, because Arthur had a problem where if you stood at the same y coordinate as him, he'd be able to walk through walls. The fix is actually very simple, but collision between the NPC's and walls isn't working as well as I'd like. I suppose it'll have to do as it is. I'm also working on a webpage for the game. It should also be done around this weekend. The demo may not be as buggy as I expected.

Seeing as nobody seems to care about this project anymore, I guess it won't matter that I wait until tomorrow to release the demo.
I have, believe it or not, solved all of the bugs that I knew about. There were even some saving bugs that seemed impossible to solve, but I removed encryption saves, and it seems to be bug-free now. There is one minor problem, the NPC cannot walk up against a wall. This is minor, though, and nothing to worry about. I'll solve it sometime after this demo. I just have to gather my resources and make the patch. I'll upload the webpage tomorrow also.
And don't get me wrong, the demo is done, I just don't have the time to upload it right now (56k)

Demo 1 out. userweb.nni.com/cmagicj/arthur.zip (757,951 bytes) after downloading that, download the patch: userweb.nni.com/cmagicj/patch_1.zip (151,248 bytes) Unzip the patch in the same directory as you have the arthur.zip. Apply the patch to arthur.zip. Then, once that's done, you can then unzip arthur.zip. Savegames are not compatable between the original and the patch, so it's recommended you delete anything the game made with the exception of the zip if you've played already. When it plays for the first time it should show the game info. If it doesn't, just hit F1. Read through the game info carefully. I have also included cheats, read the cheat section to access certain areas that you cannot access normally.

It seems to work good But the character sprites gotta go! I can't hear any music and i tried toggling it on and off. Fullscreen enlarges it too much the pixels are huge. I like the gridline thing although i'm not sure what it's for. It's nice to see a non-anime game
so all i got to say is kepp up the good work!!

Well, like I said, you need to read the Game Information.
)But the character sprites gotta go! I haven't got a sprite artist. )I can't hear any music and i tried toggling it on and off. in the game info I said I got rid of the music. it took up too much room, wasn't original, and I don't have a composer )Fullscreen enlarges it too much the pixels are huge. I made fullscreen for people who complained that it's too small )I like the gridline thing although i'm not sure what it's for. Debugging mostly. Some people like to see a grid in their grid games.
BIG BUG FOUND!!!! When you go into cheat mode, do not type "allans". It will give an error. I removed that section of the game, but forgot to remove the section. It was an area for debugging and alpha testing purposes only. I'm fixing up some small bugs I'm running across in cheat mode, so a demo patch will be out soon.
PATCH OUT!!! the link is with the post where I put the original download, along with instructions. This patch will fix certain bugs I found in the cheat console.

I checked out the view thing that was cool. The joke cheat i didn't really get. In your credits it says "caugh" i think it's spelled "cough"

The view was meant for the first few versions of the game, back when it was June6. It was primarily intended so you could see where any items you missed were (as you collected all the items to 'win' the game, and go to the credits screen)
The joke thing is pretty much just a little egg in the game, a joke amongst the alpha testers that I didn't take out for the demo.
The caugh part was also a little joke for the alpha testers. I didn't take that one out for the demo either.
So basically, you've just located two inside jokes that I didn't take out for the demo. These two things will be adjusted/removed for the true release, though.
As you may have noticed, the cheat menu was intended 100% for debugging/alpha testing. That's the way it is in most games.

Hey, I just checked out this download. Its really nice. I most of all liked the rain effects. I did make the mistake of putting 1 million in as a rain value and it ate up all my system resources and kicked me out of the program... But anything over 1000 and you cant see the screen anymore anyways.
Keep up the good work! This has a real Ultima feel to it. I really enjoyed those games and I can see yours is going to be chock full of particle effects on down the line. Cant wait for the release so I can plop down my 10 bucks! Looks like its going to be a very enjoyable game.
