My preference for painting is watercolor. But make sure you get the kind in the tubes and some actual watercolor paper, any art store with carry it. Water colors have a nice soft look to them. There are also watercolor pencils which work a lot like colored pencils but you can take a brush with water and blend the colors the result can be quite nice, for those you also should use watercolor paper but I've also heard stiff art paper like bristol board works too. The other good option is acrylic paints. Not the crappy craft kind like at Walmart, again this takes a trip to an art store or online art catalog. Acrylics also come in tubes and they are a lot like oil paints in the way they look but they can be diluted with water and dry much faster, not to mention they don't smell as bad as oils and they aren't toxic. You should use a stiff art paper like bristol board, you can also use canvas paper which really gives an oil painted look. One of the best sites I know for resources on art is WetCanvas, it can be kinda hard to navigate though. www.wetcanvas.com/
