ok, i was wondering what to put in my game, so i thought i'd make a post out of it. what do you prefer in your games: 1.What type of minigames do you like? ie, card (ff8), variety(ff7), coin(ffx-2), fishing(bof4), none? 2. Do you prefer your text to scrollon, with a button to speed it, up, or do you like it to appear all at once? 3. Do you prefer real time or turnbased battles?why? thats all really, if you can think of anything else, just add it

1) no preference.
2) I personally prefer for all the text to appear at once, that way I can read it at my own pace, but if I've already read it, I don't have to wait for it to finish to skip over it. Others prefer it to appear 1 letter at a time. Pokemon somewhat allows you to choose.
3) I prefer real time because it's more realistic, and you can get into more battles. Also, you decide to run or fight, without having to choose the option (LOZ style)

good answers, i just realised I havent answered them!
1) i like something progressive, so like the card game.
2) I like it to appear all at once. but when it is scrolled, i think a button should be used to speed it up/skip to end of text.
3) Turn based, i like the whole pace and logice element. I like it like ff x-2 because it is fast paced, almost realtime ;D

1) Most minigames are just made for fun, but that add variety to the original story =) 2) I like it letter by letter, but by pressing any button, you show the whole message. 3) Turn-Based. Yet, there is only one good Real-Time RPG, and that is Diablo(I & II).

Good idea.
What about Legend of Zelda (LOZ)? In Oot, it seems about as realistic real-time as you can have.

1. the mini game i like best is a game in it self, like for example in kingdom hearts, but dont make it to marvelious, just something like 1911 in the gamemaker examples.
2. I like it to appear all at once because its annoying when it scrolls, it might scroll to slow for you because your a fast reader, and i just find it really annoying when it scrolls.
3. Real time or turn based... me i dont give either way as long as its fun, you could make an entirly different way for all i care, as long as its good and doesnt bore me

1) Anything, as long as its fun and you can spend ages doing it to take a break from the rest of the game (like minigames in Zelda, especially fishing). 2) Depends on whether I already know what is being said or not, and also whether i'm in a rush or not. I sually prefer it to scroll though. 3) Real-Time battles, without a doubt, for the reasons IsmAvatar said. Turn based battles get too boring and repetitive, especially with random battles.
Also The Baldur's Gate series and the Neverwinter Nights series on PC. And Dungeon Seige. Umm... maybe not Dungeon Siege...

1. -
2. When all text is visible atonce, can be good with scroll in some game though, were they use voices.
3. Depends on what kind of turnbased, but I hate pokemon battle system if thats what you mean. In that case I prefer real time.

1) I always found the fishing game in bof rather cute ^_^
2) I prefer all at once, I'm a very fast reader and I usually get annoyed at the scrolling ones.
3) Turn based. If it's the style of most Squaresoft RPGs, but it needs some sort of strategy or other element to it that makes it less boring for people who like real time. I don't care for real time as much because I find the size of the characters especially with 2d games are small enough that I have trouble seeing everything that is going on but that's a problem with my eyesight not the system itself.

thanks everyone, I have decided to have a fighting championship minigame, in which you fight up the ranks. My text scrolls, but can be skipped to the end, and my battles are turnbased, but fast so not boring.
another question: grid movement or not. weigh up the pros and cons.

You'd have to start a whole other topic for grid movement. I'd like to see how that one goes. Make it a poll.

"Also The Baldur's Gate series and the Neverwinter Nights series on PC."
...or any other RPG made by Bioware Corp. (includes KOTOR! W00t!)
