I paid $20 when it was still $5 to register Game Maker. I did so because I wanted to 'thank' Mark for his work... it turned out to be a worthwhile gesture because I can still use multiplayer functions.

If you really want to make MMORPGS, then you HAVE to get a registered copy of GM 5.1. The reason is that it allows you to synchronize 1 million different variables (in other words, it supports up to 1 million IND) while GM 5 only allows 10 thousand (that's a BIG difference). Unless you want to do it the other way... which is by transfering Messages (but this is much more time consuming....). And second point: Many people complain that they can't register because of their parents, well, all I have to say is: "Try to convince them to register for you... But if all else fails, then it's too bad for you."

I never have a problem when it comes to my step dad and his credit card. He buys everything off the net anyway so he doesn't mind. Anyway you can still do loads without a registered version. You just can't make Mp's online, or particles.

you can still make particles, they're just slower than with the particle system. (that's what sprites are for, then again)

Besides, $15 is pocket change, even to a 12 year old. I wish I had $15 bucks, I'd do my laundry..... just a small reminder that $0.15 can be a lot of money if you don't have it. sorry I was homless from 17 to present of and on and I'm alittle sensitive to people taking money(however miniscule) for granted..........

ok, homeless is a good excuse, but it's a wonder how you have a computer with little over - or under - 15 cents.
Not to mention, internet access.

" - Whoa, that's a bit sad... (didn't mean it in the offending way). I feel sorry for you. I don't really care about money, I don't have much, but I'm not the type of guy who saves every penny. I'd throw away my money sometimes if it wasn't against the law (Sometimes I go crazy and starts hating money, so I want to rip it up and chuck it in the garbage can).

Uh.... back on topic: You can still use 5.0, but like I said, you can only synchronize 10,000 different variables that way (which isn't much for a MMORPG).

no, I meant that in the most respectable manner it could have been said.

Back on Topic ( ): I don't think MMORPGs are just the reason, DLLs, Particle system, advanced drawing functions, advanced motion planning functions, other advanced funtions, plus your helping towards the next version of GM. Although an MMORPG through my eyes will never be made in GM until Mark programs some better i-net with that DirectPlay =/ Probly not until GM7 I guess. Heh I registered GM to get my hands on the Mplay functions. =) *look at my sig and wip*

Getting back to online multiplayer...
Honestly, I've been using gm for about a year now, I use winsock.dll for the online part of my games. Some people think the coding bit of a MMORPG is hard, it's not hard to program in a sense, but it is hard to understand how it all works and where the data should all be. The true hardest part for me is getting things like sprites, the time consuming things...
Yesterday, I sat down for three hours and made a fully functional MMORPG Server+Client(with items and infinite players). Today I've been adding things like monsters, NPC's and admin commands.
I've also been writing a guide on how MMORPG's work, especially considering how a infinite player setup works..
but meh...
