Per request of Xenith (which just shows that he's too lazy to create the thread himself), there is now a thread discussing Life, Longevity, and for a twist of my own, The Meaning of Life (all puns intended - if you get my gist).
A slight warning for those of you who believe in an afterlife, the bible, or other such superstitions - this debate is not for you, and you should die just when God (or whoever the heck you worship) would like you to, rather than going against His will and daring to blaspheme the mundane longevity.
Now that I have all the Atheists' attention (caugh)...
What really makes you live longer? Does all work and no play really keep you another day? And what's with this pill-popping stuff? Are we really still alive, or are we just living this mindless game we call Wizened (look it up in the dictionary if you don't know that word) hoping that someone will whack us broadside the head with a baseball bat - hard. Should we try to live longer? Here's a tricky one. Are we supposed to be overpopulating the wo-- woops, let that one slip --- I mean, are we really supposed to be seeking the fountain of youth? Who's to say? The Æther of Life - Stem Cells? Cloning? These big words keep being flung around, but nobody's really explaining what it is they're doing. Let's clue each other in.
And the big two (aye, there's another one, which you may be asking once you read the answer to the first one):
THE MEANING OF LIFE! Huh? Life has meaning? Woah... that's deep.
THE MEANING OF DEATH! Mr. Grim Reaper shares a few words with us about what happens when you stop popping pills and why it has to be that way.
As always, debate, take sides (if there are sides to be taken), and see how much information you can pull from The Omniscient Avatar.

It seams almost every forum I'm a member of has some sort of a thread devoted to this. And they always get a Hithchikers Guide refrence...
THE MEANING OF LIFE! Is, obviously, 42.
To help any one who doesnt know why the heck stem cells and cloning are important to science... let me put it simply... or as simply as my mind can make it...
Say you get sick, your liver is bad, and you need a liver transplant. Instead of searching for a doner, cloning would have an exact replica of your liver back when it was healthy that they could put into your body to replace the old skrewed up one.
As for stem cells, I think it has something to do with both cloning and curing diseases.
I just remembered some more things about stem cells. 1:They contain your genetic code(DNA) 2:If done right, future scientists may be able to alter the genetic code of a stem cell to create the perfect human. A human free from all diseases and malformations and such... 3:I forgot... 4:Stem Cells are a key feature in cloning because they contain the genetic material blahblahblech... I already stated this part...

really i dont think life really has meaning, we have no idea of most of the stuff that goes on out in space, where do all the asteroids and stuff come from? does everything just pop out of no where? it's possible that whatever created the universe is having a competition to see what species takes over the universe or to see which species finds our who created them first, it's sad that we'll never live long enough to find out, and it's sad that most people will are causing damage to our planet and that would cause the premature death or our world.

I believe in the Big Bang Theory(well what the hell else created Anti-Matter?)which means that our universe was created by a massive amount of heat.
We try to live longer because thats what our sub conscious mind tells us to do. Combined with our ability to learn is what really caused the worlds descent into darkness.
Imagine a lion on the ground, and a non-learning man in a tree, sometimes the man might manage to kill the lion, others he might be killed. Until we learn, we give ourselves a huge percent chance over the lion. But then we want revenge when the lion does manage to kill someone. We've learned how to live longer is our ultimate mistake. We surpass what our normal life is by far too much.
As for stem cells and medicine, this was a good topic my friend bought up a long time ago. Imagine one single virus cell not much on it's own, if it multiplied it probally wouldn't get very far before dieing. Now imagine a million, all multiplying. Some medicine comes along and starts to kill them all and while it does kill alot, the virus starts breeding more and more, these new ones starting to take longer to be killed by the medicine. Until they have bred out any weakness to it and become immune.
While a virus mutates it's self to become stronger, our bodys do the same. Lives are lost in the process but not as many as now. Because when we use medicine, it tells our bodys defence to stand down while it does the work. And with all things in our body, if it's not needed it doesn't get as many supplies and shrinks. Until one day when a virus comes along thats immune to the drug but not the bodys defence, and wipes them all our because of how weak they are.
I don't believe perfect should be a word, because what is it's definition? A computer sites defence can always be hacked just like our bodys over time.

The meaning of life is to live it long and reproduce. We are all animals for christs sake, just look at nature, what do all living beings have incommon? We all reproduce, sure you might think I'm simply saying go and have sex as much as possible but think about it, seriously.

Every argument is unwinable on a long enough time line given an opponent with enough wit. Hence the dichotomy between good/evil, altruism/self interest, aetheism and theism. If no rhetorical position is defendable, it makes little sense to have one or believe in anything at all, if truth is the goal.
Thus I propose this - there is no value or use in what we believe, only in what we CHOOSE. Let me furnish you with some examples... You hear voices in your head separate from your inner monologue. Cultural differences asside, you will most likely have two alternatives available to you; you are psychologically ill, or some being is communicating with you. Since neither alternative is provable, you choose to live with the one which is more pleasing - the latter.
Depending on the nature of the communication, you might apply any number of personas to this being. If the communication is helpful, you might even end up calling it "God". The important point here is that you believe nothing - you chose to live with the alternative which was more pleasant given unprovable alternatives.
And so it follows: Is there an afterlife, or simply oblivion? Afterlife seems more pleasant to me, I choose to live as if there is one. Is there a God influencing events, or are all these coincidences simply just coincidences? I choose the former.
Now all that remains is for people to acknowledge the process. Acknowledge, and accept, that a choice has been made, and that the only truth is that each person chooses.
So.... What do you guys choose?

Logically, it does. The positive existential proclamation bears the burden of proof. This is why a prosecutor must prove a crime was committed and then who committed the crime. The logical default for the positive premise that a crime has been committed is not "yes" or even "maybe" but "no". If I loudly proclaim that I have an invisible dragon in my garage, the logical default for that proposition, barring evidence, is "no".
I don't care what people believe. I care when people pervert logic to support the mistaken idea that their belief is logical when it is not.

Your assertions are rediculous. What can be observed can be proved and called "fact", but that does not mean the unobservable is false. Barring a subjective quantum reality - which is entirely acceptable I suppose - the planets in our solar system existed long before they were ever discovered. But as far as logic goes - yes, such a proclamation does bear the burden of proof, but not in retrospect. So, in summary, the statement "Just because we have no proof of something doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't exist" is true.
